STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — The Stone Mountain City Council voted Tuesday night to begin the formal process of removing Mayor Beverly Jones from office.
Council members say Jones violated her oath by taking control of the city's bank accounts without approval earlier this year. While no funds were reported stolen, the council is now seeking to subpoena Truist Bank for more information about the mayor’s actions.
This follows weeks of growing tension between the mayor and the council. In June, the council launched an independent investigation after learning Mayor Jones had sole authority over the city’s accounts—something City Manager Shawn Edmondson said bypassed the city’s normal financial controls.
