Danville City Council voted to add another renewable energy source to the city’s power portfolio during its regular meeting Tuesday night.

City Council voted 8-0 to enter into a purchase power agreement with American Municipal Power for 5 megawatts of waste heat energy captured from compressor stations.

The Tallgrass agreement is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week resource that is projected to be below market and provides renewable energy credits, Danville Utilities Director Jason Grey wrote in a letter to City Council.

A 5-megawatt generator would provide enough energy to power the equivalent of about 1,000 homes, Grey told the Register & Bee in June.
