The United Way of Danville Pittsylvania County has tapped Dean Hairston as a “champion” of its upcoming campaign.

Hairston, who currently works for Caesars Virginia, retired in 2022 as deputy chief of the Danville Police Department.

As the so-called champion, he will lead volunteers in an effort to bring in more donor dollars.

Last year, the local nonprofit had a 28% drop in workplace contributions, blamed on job losses in the region.

Funding 20 different agencies in the Dan River Region, the United Way presents itself as a one-stop shop for someone who wants to contribute but is unsure of where the money should go.

The donations mostly come through workplace campaigns, which kick off next month.
