ATLANTA — Nearly half a million people lost their Georgia voter registration on Wednesday in a move the state says is a regular exercise to protect the integrity of voter lists.

More than five million Georgians voted in last November's presidential election.

State officials say those voters, plus those who voted in the 2020 presidential election, are still on the voter rolls. But this week, the state removed more than 478,000 names from its voter list. The audit began in July.

"Anytime your rolls get inflated, it can unnecessarily cause extra expenses," said Blake Evans, Elections Director for the Georgia Secretary of State's office.
