One man is dead and another was critically injured in a shooting that happened during a dispute over property lines in Alexander County, according to law enforcement.

Robert Alan Carpenter, 65, died at the scene. Joey Albert Williams, 74, was shot. Williams was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, Alexander County Sheriff Chad Pennell said in a news release.

Williams is a retired Alexander County Sheriff’s Office deputy. Pennell said Williams retired in 2009.

No charges have been filed. The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate since Williams was a deputy, Pennell said.
