It all started when Terry Kucik received a call on Aug. 3 from someone claiming to be from Scotiabank.
The caller told the 61-year-old Hamilton Mountain resident someone had racked up charges on his credit cards for more than $6,000 in B.C., and a hold was going to be put on them immediately.
“It was from the same number that I have on the back of my credit card,” said the longtime Dofasco employee.
In less than 24 hours, close to $27,000 had been siphoned from his Scotiabank and CIBC accounts, Kucik said.
It appears Kucik fell victim to an increasingly common credit card and identity theft scam that often targets the most vulnerable, especially seniors. He is the second Hamilton-area resident The Spectator has written about this month who has experienced a similar financial fraud.
