The California Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected a petition from Republican legislators seeking to block Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting push, clearing the way for a November referendum on new congressional maps.

In a brief order, the justices wrote: “Petitioners have failed to meet their burden of establishing a basis for relief at this time under California Constitution article IV, section 8.”

Republicans had argued Democrats improperly bypassed a 30-day waiting rule before advancing the plan, but the court declined to intervene. The ruling allows lawmakers to proceed as early as Thursday with legislation to set up the special election.
