OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - This day eight years ago was a bit darker than your typical Nebraska day.
That’s because in 2017, the path of totality of a solar eclipse ran through towns like Beatrice, Alliance, and Falls City.
For nearly two and a half minutes around 1 p.m., people experienced complete darkness during the light of day when the moon blocked the sun’s light.
The celestial event was a big boom for the state. According to Visit Nebraska, the event brought over 700,000 people to Nebraska, and added more than $125 million to the economy.
It was the first total solar eclipse in the state since 1954, and there won’t be another in Nebraska until 2106.
