A controversy surrounding the removal of Union Jack and St George's Cross flags from the streets of a major UK city has prompted more individuals to investigate the rules and laws governing flag flying in the UK.
The 'Flag-gate' incident began last week when it was disclosed that Birmingham City Council had immediately taken down both England and UK flags from lampposts, citing health and safety reasons.
Following the dispute, a form of flag resistance has emerged in Birmingham, with locals spray painting the St George's Cross of England on roundabouts and hanging flags of the British Isles in protest on streets and houses, leading to a reversal by the local authority and flags being raised again.
