PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Amelia Gray, a polar bear who has called the Oregon Zoo home since 2021, will soon head to the Brookfield Zoo near Chicago as part of a nationwide effort to help sustain the species. Visitors in Portland can see her through early September.
Zoo officials said the 8-year-old bear’s move is intended to support breeding efforts. She will be introduced to another female, Hope, and a male, Hudson.
“We’ve been so honored to care for Amelia these past four years,” said Rachel Ritchason, the Oregon Zoo’s deputy director of animal care. “We’re really going to miss her. But we’re also excited that she’ll get to spend time with a male bear — and hopefully be able to raise some cubs.”
