A Chicago area zoo will soon be home to a new polar bear.
Brookfield Zoo Chicago is expected to welcome an 8-year-old female named Amelia Gray this fall from Oregon Zoo in Portland. She will join two other polar bears, female Hope and male Hudson in Brookfield, Illinois. The goal is for her to raise cubs one day.
Zoo officials describe her as "playful and curious."
Polar bears are classified as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. They face a high risk of global extinction due to changes in their Arctic habitat.
Zoo officials say Amelia’s move is part of a "new cooperative program aimed at maintaining a sustainable, genetically diverse polar bear population at U.S. zoos and aquariums."
Amelia was born at the Columbus Zoo in 2016 and moved to Portland in 2021.
