It will be up to Alex Ovechkin to decide whenever he’s ready to discuss his future with the Washington Capitals.

The NHL record-holder with 897 goals, Ovechkin will celebrate his 40th birthday Sept. 17, when the Capitals open training camp. The left wing is entering his 21st NHL season and the last of the five-year, $47.5 million contract ($9.5 million average annual value) he signed with Washington on July 27, 2021. Many are left wondering if this will be his last NHL season.

Capitals general manager Chris Patrick said he hasn’t talked with Ovechkin yet about his plans beyond this season and will let him determine when that conversation takes place.
