PLYMOUTH, N.C. (WITN) - A Roper man will spend the next 20 to 25 years in state prison after a jury found him guilty of second degree murder.

District Attorney Tom Anglim says a Washington County jury convicted Brandon Carter for the April 28, 2021, killing of Cedric Gillard.

The shooting happened outside of Carol’s Variety Store #2.

Anglim says that before the shooting, the two men had exchanged words in the parking lot.

The D.A. says after initially shooting Gillard, Carter stood over the victim as he crawled toward the store, and surveillance video showed him shooting the man four times to the back of his head at point-blank range.

The D.A. says Gillard “was senselessly executed by Carter”.
