Ontario’s Office of the Chief Coroner has released its quarterly report on suspected opioid toxicity deaths.

The data shows that Sault Ste. Marie saw two deaths, confirmed or probable, in the first quarter of 2025 (May 2025-July 2025).

In 2024, there were 39 deaths in the city.

The data shows that there were also two suspected deaths in nearby Elliot Lake and one in Sagamok during the first three months of the year. Across Ontario, between May and July, there were 605 suspect-drug related deaths, the website reads.

The provincial data shows an eight per cent decrease from the three months prior (February 2025-April 2025) and a 41 per cent decrease from the same period last year.
