PALM BAY — About an hour’s drive from the launch pads of Cape Canaveral, one of the oldest Florida-based aerospace companies is gunning to support President Trump’s call to create the Golden Dome missile defense system.

Officials with Melbourne-based L3Harris cut the ribbon Thursday on a $100 million, 94,000-square-foot facility at its south Brevard County campus that will be focused on assembling, integrating and testing full constellations of satellites.

For now, the stark, white and cavernous high bay of the facility, reminiscent of a scene out of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” sits empty with 112 glaring lights shining down from 65 feet above.
