A month after a contentious public hearing, a proposed new zoning code for Edinburgh is moving forward.

On Tuesday, the Edinburgh Plan Commission voted to give a favorable recommendation for the proposed new Unified Development Ordinance, or UDO. The vote was 8-1, with only commission member Ray Walton voting against the recommendation.

The new UDO aims to update the current ordinance, which has become outdated, previously said Brian Stump with HWC Engineering, the firm the town hired for help modernizing the ordinance.

The plan commission’s favorable recommendation comes after the vote was continued last month. Dozens of community members spoke during public comment at the July 15 meeting, many with concerns, including property maintenance standards and code enforcement tools.
