CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - The Charleston Police Department said members of its Patrol Division initiated a traffic stop at the entrance of Orchard Manor, Griffin Drive at 11:35 a.m. today.
During the stop, officers asked the driver to step out of the car to conduct a narcotic investigation, CPD said.
CPD said the driver then threw a bag of suspected fentanyl and struck one officer in the chest.
Police also said a bag of suspected fentanyl was found on the ground where officers were trying to gain control of the suspect.
After a short struggle, police said they were able to handcuff the driver.
The driver was identified as Memphis Ross, 24, of Charleston, according to CPD.
CPD said three officers were exposed to fentanyl during the incident, with one officer being issued Narcan.
