EDWARDSVILLE, Ill . (First Alert 4) - An Illinois man was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison, after pleading guilty to charges of attempted murder in a shooting from more than three decades ago.

The Illinois State’s Attorney’s Office said 54-year-old Robert D. Mason was originally charged in the shooting of an Alton man in 1994, but was not able to be found after those charges were filed.

It was not until 30 years later that Alton Police tracked down Mason during an identity theft investigation last year. He was living in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

A release from the attorney’s office said the identity theft investigation was triggered after an Alton resident reported someone in Michigan was using their name on financial documents.
