WESTERLY, RI (WFSB) - Hurricane Erin is moving closer to New England after unleashing powerful waves and rip currents along the East Coast on Thursday.

Luckily, Connecticut was protected by Long Island, but people in the state went across the border to check out the big waves at Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly.

As of Thursday afternoon, there were strong winds and even stronger waves that doubled in size at Misquamicut.

For that reason, only experienced surfers were allowed in the ocean with their boards.

“I’m gonna catch some waves somewhere man, that’s for sure,” said Jason Gadue from Waterbury.

However, surfers faced challenges with strong rip currents and heavy waves that closed out quickly and broke close to shore.
