United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued a direct call on Thursday to the United States and Venezuela to "resolve their differences through peaceful means" and to "exercise restraint," in an attempt to defuse the escalation promoted by the White House and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The warning from the world's top diplomatic official follows the U.S. announcement that the United States had reportedly sent three destroyers carrying more than 4.000 sailors to waters near the Venezuelan coast, expected to arrive this weekend.

Guterres' deputy spokesperson, Daniela Gross, confirmed that the secretary-general is following developments "very closely," though she declined to describe the military deployment as a violation of the UN Charter when questioned on the matter.
