An attack by the Central General Staff (EMC), a FARC dissident group, left at least 12 police officers dead and eight others wounded in northwestern Colombia, President Gustavo Petro confirmed.

The attack occurred this Thursday against a counternarcotics helicopter that was carrying out a coca crop eradication operation in the Amalfi subregion of Antioquia.

Although President Petro initially reported on his social media that there were eight dead, hours later authorities increased the death toll to twelve uniformed personnel after receiving reports from the scene, although they have not yet been evacuated due to the difficulty of accessing the jungle area where the attack occurred, according to EFE.
