State schools Superintendent Ryan Walters sought to hire an attorney from outside the Oklahoma State Department of Education as he awaits a decision from Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna about whether criminal charges are merited following a well-publicized incident during last month’s state Board of Education meeting .

Public documents indicate Walters wanted an attorney for "pre-charge criminal defense in Oklahoma County" in hopes to "minimize the likelihood of criminal charges being filed."
