Louisiana’s Son now has his own day in the place that raised him.

The City of New Orleans honored Tyrann Mathieu for his contributions both as a citizen and as a football player Thursday afternoon at City Hall, giving him a key to the city and proclaiming August 21 to be Tyrann Mathieu Day in New Orleans.

“I just feel so prideful,” Mathieu said. “I feel like I represented the city and the state and my family. I did it to the best of my abilities, and now you get rewarded for it.”

Mathieu, who announced his surprising retirement after 12 NFL seasons earlier this summer, arrived at City Hall early in the afternoon to accept a key to the city from mayor LaToya Cantrell. He then made his way to the city council chambers, where he was recognized for his on- and off-field contributions
