A Lacombe city councillor wants to look at ways to reduce the number of heavy trucks trundling through the historic downtown.

Coun. Thalia Hibbs proposed a notice of motion recently calling for a council committee meeting to determine key topics to be addressed in a future report on the advantages and disadvantages of restricting heavy truck traffic on 50th Avenue between C&E Trail and Highway 2A.

The notice of motion to discuss the issue at a Sept. 29 committee meeting passed by a 4-3 vote, with Mayor Grant Creasey and councillors Chris Ross and Reuben Konnik against.

Hibbs told council that restrictions would help divert trucks from using the downtown route and encourage truck drivers to use the 34th Street bypass, "which remains under-utilized."
