NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Animal welfare advocates are calling for change after several Kentucky thoroughbreds were found neglected, abused, left for dead, or euthanized in Puerto Rico.

Chrissy Laughlin grew up near the Del Mar racetrack in California.

After a trip to Puerto Rico, she fell in love with the island and decided to relocate.

But when she moved there, she soon realized the differences in their horse racing industry.

“It was really horrifying,” she said. “My life of paradise quickly turned into a life of animal advocacy in general, and I think it’s important to be part of the change and part of the voice. So, I always looked for ways I could help animals in a meaningful way.”
