The sheriff of Suffolk County, who is accused by federal authorities of using his position to extort the executive of a Boston cannabis company, appeared before a judge on Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins , 68, of Boston, was alongside his attorney, Martin Weinberg, before Judge M. Page Kelley in the city’s federal courthouse.

Tompkins pleaded not guilty to two counts of extortion under color of official right. He was ordered released on personal recognizance with standard conditions, including no use or possession of marijuana or firearms, and frequent probation check-ins.
