BOULDER — Just about a week away from the season opener, Colorado’s starting defense is all but set. Except for one key spot.

Two years ago, the Buffaloes were searching for someone to step up and be the No. 2 cornerback opposite Travis Hunter. They found it last fall in DJ McKinney. Now, Hunter is off to the NFL and McKinney has seamlessly transitioned into being the team’s top cornerback with an NFL future.

But the Buffs once again find themselves searching for a second starting outside cornerback — and it's an important spot, too. Hunter was targeted just 10.8% of snaps last season (tied for the fewest among Power 4 cornerbacks with over 400 snaps) and McKinney could have a similar impact this season, meaning plenty of targets going to everyone else in coverage.
