BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) — Things have been calm since local police instituted extra security measures inside the Garden Oaks Apartment Complex, but the City of Beaufort wants to continue to be proactive with a new ordinance designed to keep things safe for much longer.
“It just seemed like the right time to bring this nuisance abatement ordinance to the forefront,” said JJ Suave, the Deputy City Manager for the City of Beaufort.
Police reports acquired by WSAV showed 23 incidents reported at the Garden Oaks complex in the first 6 months of this year; 4 of those were shootings.
The trend in crime at the apartments is what officials said pushed the city to roll out a Public Nuisance Abatement Ordinance.
Officials explained that the ordinance is not just focused on crime.
