This week, Apple opened a manufacturing academy in Detroit, which the company is touting as part of a $600 billion commitment to the U.S. over the next four years.

President Donald Trump and his administration deserve credit for securing such commitments from Apple and other corporations. Detroiters know well the whiplash of the rise and fall of American manufacturing, and it could mean a lot to see American companies reverse decades of outsourcing.

However, Apple, like many companies, has a history of failing to live up to its promises to invest in American manufacturing. This time, the White House should make sure the tech giant follows through.
