A postal worker in Sydney has been charged with stealing bank cards from the mail, which were later used in a $1.4 million fraud scheme. The 56-year-old man allegedly targeted residents in the affluent suburbs of Edgecliff, Woollahra, and Double Bay.
Authorities claim the postal worker supplied the stolen cards to organized crime groups, enabling them to commit fraud. The investigation, led by the Crime Command's Financial Crimes Squad, began in November 2024 with the establishment of Strike Force Rubi.
On August 20, police executed early morning raids across Rockdale and Roselands, resulting in the arrest of the postal worker at a Rockdale address. During the raids, officers seized over $14,000 in cash, an encrypted communication device, stolen bank cards, a taser, and various luxury items, including watches and handbags.
The postal worker faces multiple charges, including 143 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage, theft of 70 pieces of mail, and participation in a criminal group.
In addition to the postal worker, two other men were arrested. A 35-year-old man was charged with 14 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage, 50 counts of dishonestly obtaining property, receiving stolen mail, possessing prohibited drugs, and participating in a criminal group. A 27-year-old man was also arrested and charged with 76 counts of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage and other related offenses.
All three men appeared in court on August 21 and were denied bail. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities expect further arrests and charges as they continue to gather evidence.
