RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A man from Raleigh could spend more than 50 years in prison for an alleged crime spree that involved ramming a police squad car, a high-speed chase in a stolen pickup truck, and ending in a standoff with SWAT.

Elmer Bautista Candela, 21, appeared by video in a Wake County Justice Center courtroom. He was delayed as he had another appearance earlier that day for a domestic violence incident.

Prosecutors said the crime spree began on Aug. 16 when Candela allegedly tried to steal a car on Thistlebrook Court. When the police arrived to investigate, they said Candela took off, hitting two police cars and an officer in the process.
