BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Lawrence Academy in Bertie County has had a tennis team for the last 30-35 years, but they haven’t had tennis courts.
That changed on Thursday, with the tennis teams’ first-ever home conference matches.
The project to build tennis courts got started thanks to the efforts of a group of parents who started a grassroots fundraiser.
“I don’t think there’s a parent in the world that wouldn’t move Heaven and earth to give their children every advantage, and we needed tennis courts,” said Katharine Farless, a parent who helped lead the fundraising. “I think once upon a time, Lawrence Academy’s mantra was ‘where parents make a difference,’ and we knew that if it was going to happen, we’d have to find the money and make it happen.”
