Marcus Torres' year-long journey from walk-on at UTEP out of Pebble Hills High School to a rising member of the receiver rotation took a deeply meaningful turn when the redshirt freshman was awarded the honorary No. 2 Luke Laufenberg jersey.
The jersey, with the Laufenberg name on the back, is in honor of the tight end who played for UTEP in spring of 2019 before succumbing to leukemia later that year .
It was initially worn by receiver Justin Garrett in 2019 and '20, then passed to Gavin Hardison and then to Javoni Gardere last year. It is awarded to the player who exemplifies the fight of Laufenberg.
