The human remains found early Tuesday after firefighters put out a Kapolei wildfire were not dismembered as initial reports indicated, police said.
The body was found inside a makeshift structure within a homeless encampment after Honolulu Fire Department personnel extinguished a brush fire near 4451 Kapolei Parkway after 1:30 a.m.
An initial report by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services described the body as “dismembered,” which the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and other Honolulu media reported.
The Honolulu Police Department issued a statement Wednesday saying, “There is no evidence to suggest that the body was dismembered. An autopsy was conducted today by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office, which confirmed that the remains were not dismembered.”
