LINN COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) - A number of fires at the Linn County landfill over the past week are being linked to a simple piece of advertising.

It looks like a folder or small book, they’re called video brochures. You open them up and the brochure plays a short promotional video. The problem is, those brochures contain lithium batteries, which when crushed can start fires.

“All the sudden you might have a truck that’s on it’s way out to the recycling center or the landfill and there’s a fire in the back of there,” said Joe Horaney, Linn County Solid Waste Agency deputy director.

Horaney worries the ads could end up in people’s mail, and some of them will get thrown in the trash without ever being opened.
