MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — The U.S. Department of Justice said it has obtained indictments against a Morristown man accused of running an elaborate scam to obtain and launder more than $550,000 in class action claims through a sham business by using the names of dead and retired pro baseball players.
The man, 69-year-old George Herman Ruth, shares a name with baseball legend George Herman "Babe" Ruth.
Ruth is no stranger to federal investigators. He has been accused and convicted in other elaborate scams through the years. He recently finished a federal prison sentence and was on supervised probation after being convicted in 2020 of trying to scam millions of dollars from the Social Security Administration and the IRS between 2010 and 2017.
