On August 13, a brisk wind of 12-15 knots (with stronger gusts) encouraged the Quissett Race Committee of Sarah Meigs and Doug Jones to set up a course within the protected confines of the Penzance Point cove and dropped a temporary starting/finish mark X just off Gansett Beach. For both the S and the H12 classes, the course consisted of a short beat to Stoney Beach, a long run (for the S class to Racing Beach and for the H12s to the starting mark), a beat back to Stoney Beach, a run to the Quissett entrance buoy and a short beat back to the finish.

With all four S boats on the line at the start, the setting was established for an exciting battle on the water. However, Alan Haigh in Teaticket took advantage of an inshore lift and moved into a lead that he would not relinquish.
