SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

As triple-digit heat coincides with the start of the high school football season in Sacramento, school districts are adjusting schedules to keep student-athletes safe from heat-related illnesses.

Destiny Christian Academy Lions are preparing for their season opener against Linden High School, with their game rescheduled to 8 p.m. to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Coach Antuan Simmons emphasized the importance of keeping his team safe.

"We don't want to burn them out prior to the game," he said. "You just kind of got to play it by ear. You got to be fluid in every situation."

During a practice under the hot August sun, Simmons ensures his team takes frequent water breaks.
