"Competition" has been the most-used word since Louisville football 's fall practices began July 30.

The Cardinals had several starting spots to fill, which led to competition everywhere. The auditions began in the spring and continued throughout the fall after 10 post-spring transfer portal additions threw their hats into the mix.

After Louisville’s final preseason scrimmage , coach Jeff Brohm expressed his contentment with how the defense has been progressing. The squad returned only three full-time starters on that side of the ball — linebackers TJ Quinn and Stanquan Clark and linebacker/safety Antonio Watts — though defensive linemen Jordan Guerad and Rene Konga started six and five games, respectively, in 2024.
