Fire ban supported

Maureen Downing’s arguments, in her letter to the editor Ban backyard fires (Aug. 16), deserve to be expanded with some rhetorical questions.

Where is our medical officer of health on this issue? Surely, there’s enough modern public health data to support a ban.

London’s population is almost 500,000 and the size of new building lots is getting smaller, so how can backyard fires be considered benign?

Rather than telling staff to study how other municipalities are dealing with backyard fires, can the mayor and councillors show the courage to ban them?

In the existing procedures, are we showing sympathy toward a senior with a lung condition who needs to find a phone number to complain about a backyard fire whose location they can not determine? Can you imagine the an
