Glen Powell wanted to make sure his sprinting skills were worthy of the titular role in The Running Man. In Edgar Wright's adaptation of Stephen King's novel, the Top Gun: Maverick actor stars as Ben Richards, a desperate dad who signs up for a dangerous game show where he is chased by murderous Hunters across the world for money. Unsurprisingly, given the title, the film required Powell to do a lot of running, and he wanted to make sure he didn't disappoint in that department. "There are some sick shots in this movie," he told Empire magazine. "I talked to Edgar about this. I was like, 'I need people to know that it's me sprinting.' So he designed an amazing shot in the movie where I can fully unleash. I didn't want people to be like, 'He was good at everything except for running!'" However, Powell needed to do more than practice his running, as the film features a variety of action setpieces, and he wanted to do as many stunts himself as possible. "We're hanging on the side of buildings," he divulged. "We're jumping off of moving cars and trains. An elevator plummets while I'm inside of it. There's an amazing airplane fight sequence that is just incredible." Earlier this year, the Twisters actor revealed that he called his Top Gun: Maverick co-star Tom Cruise to get some on-screen running advice after being cast in the chase thriller. "So when I was cast, Tom was my first call... to learn how to run. He said, 'Film yourself running as soon as possible. You don't look as cool as you think.' And we did," Powell said at CinemaCon in April. "And, as you talk to these running coaches, (they say) there's, like, only one actor that knows how to run on screen. It's Tom Cruise." The Running Man will be released in cinemas on 14 November.
