There was a slightly different vibe yesterday than there was after the last Giants series.

It was not as if the Padres departed San Francisco last week declaring that their upcoming series at Dodger Stadium was the end-all or even an outright inflection point.

A few even mused about there being far too much season remaining for the matchup to be that big a deal.

But they were for the most part at least basking in the excitement of the moment. They were in first place and had a chance to move further ahead of the team that always finishes ahead of them.

And then, once again, the Dodgers showed the Padres how it is done, and the Padres showed the Dodgers what they often have.

“It was a bad series,” Gavin Sheets said yesterday. “We didn’t play our best baseball.”
