The Columbian reported on Aug. 18, 1925, the heroic rescue of 4-year-old Darline Haley from the Washougal River by 14-year-old Geraldine Swick. After Darline had fallen into the river, Geraldine, who was described as an “able swimmer,” then “plunged into the waters immediately after the child … and rescued her with little difficulty.”
