PORTLAND, Ore. — Evacuation orders are in place for more than 1,000 people in the area around Lake Billy Chinook, west of Culver in Jefferson County.
The Flat Fire, which started burning Thursday afternoon, is at 9,000 acres, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry. It's located roughly three miles west of the lake and has steadily been moving southwest under the day's breezy conditions. It's threatening structures in Jefferson and Deschutes counties.
Local residents may see smoke and suffer from poor air quality throughout the day depending on wind direction, Central Oregon Fire officials advised.
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office issued Level 3, 2 and 1 evacuation orders as the fire continues to grow and move towards the county line.
