Grand Junction Mayor Cody Kennedy decried the political nature of the issues surrounding Fourth and Fifth streets and denied micromanaging city staff during the project at a press conference at City Hall on Thursday.

City Council voted 4-3 Wednesday night to shift Fourth and Fifth streets between Ute Avenue and Grand Avenue to a two-lane configuration with no bike lanes. The streets have been in a one-lane configuration with buffered bike lanes since a pilot project aimed at slowing traffic speeds through the downtown corridor started in July 2024.

Kennedy said the city could revisit the Fourth and Fifth streets conversation to address some of the issues that led to the streets being changed in the first place sometime in the future.
