Q : I thought that this might be of interest (see reader's photo). We have managed to propagate a pineapple from the top of a grocery store fruit. It took three years, and some neglect in the back of our greenhouse, but here it is!

A:  Job well done! Once you harvest this one, the mother plant will die, but there should be pups, or small plants, at the base. You can also start a new plant from the top of the pineapple fruit that you harvest.

Q : Can you identify this plant that is growing in my neighbors' yard (See reader's photo on 6E)? The hummingbirds love it, and all she knows its name as is hummingbird bush. I would like to order one.

A:  The plant in question is in the hibiscus family and is commonly called Turk's Turban or Turks cap. Malvaviscus is the genus of this old-fashioned
