A Monroe County sheriff's deputy was fired after he was found to have violated policies during an attack in the jail that resulted in the death of an inmate, Monroe County Sheriff Michael Neal announced in a video statement on Friday.
Steve Eldrige was fired as a sheriff's deputy as a result of an internal inquiry into the Aug. 8 attack that resulted in the death of Terry Craig, 44, of Clarendon, Neal said in the video statement posted on Facebook.
Craig, who had been booked into the jail less than 12 hours earlier, was found injured in his cell and died around 10 p.m. at Baptist Health Medical Center-Stuttgart.
Craig was facing charges of having child sexual abuse material and illegal possession of a gun.
