MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - In the early hours of Saturday morning, Wisconsinites will be able to witness a somewhat rare lunar event.
While there won’t be much to actually see, the upcoming “Black Moon” is an event that only happens every 33 months or every 2 to 3 years.
Prior to this event, the last occurrence of the Black Moon was on May 19, 2023.
The term Black Moon is not an official astronomical term, but is referred to as the third new moon in a season of four new moons. This definition comes from various folklore, but is analogous to how the Farmers’ Almanac defines a Blue Moon, where a season includes four full moons instead of new moons, which also only occurs every 33 months.
