Starting in October, students at Hamilton County Schools will not be allowed to use phones while class is in session.
The school board voted 7-4 on Thursday night to approve the ban.
The ban says students cannot be on their phone from the moment the first bell rings in the morning, until the final bell at the end of the day.
This also means that students can’t use their phones during lunch, bathroom breaks, and time in between classes.
There are exceptions for students with medical needs or disabilities.
The new policy comes after Governor Bill Lee signed a law earlier this year requiring schools in the state to adopt policies banning student phone use during class time.
The policy takes effect on October 1. Download PDF
