TEMPE, Ariz. — If you're driving near Papago Park Preserve in Tempe, you may have noticed something a little different about the famed buttes.

A blue circle with a white asterisk is painted on the side of one of the buttes and is visible on the east side of Curry Road.

Alex Jovanovic, with the city of Tempe, said park rangers found the vandalism on Tuesday and reported it. The circle is roughly ten feet in diameter, and Jovanovic told 12News he does not know what the symbol represents.

The city hired a contractor to remove the paint. Jovanovic told 12News that the contractor will use a biodegradable solution to strip the paint, and the removal is likely to cost thousands of dollars.
